All About: Waxing

Waxing is a hair removal solution suitable for most with longer lasting results than other types of hair removal, leaving you silky smooth for weeks! Perfect for events, holidays and reducing your hair growth.

Types of Waxing & How it Works

Waxing removes the hair from the root. There are two main types of wax I will use in the Salon; Hot wax and Strip Wax.
Both of these have their strengths and which wax is used is generally down to the area of hair removal and client preference.

Cold wax is another popular system in the form of pre-made strips typically for home waxing but these are typically less efficient.

Hot Wax

Hot wax, as is suggests, is a heated wax which is applied to the skin using a wooden spatula. The wax cools and hardens and its removed directly without a strip along with the hairs.
This wax is great for sensitive areas or skin types and where hairs are thicker, such as the bikini area.

Strip Wax

Still a heated wax, its applied with a spatula and removed using a disposable strip which is placed over the wax.
Brilliant for larger areas such as legs, back, arms etc where the skin is less sensitive.

What To Expect During Treatment & What Areas Can Be Waxed

You can find a complete list of waxing areas by looking at my current treatment menu. This includes:
- 1/2 Leg (to the knee), 3/4 Leg (over knee), Full Leg
- Bikini Line (follows underwear), High Bikini (to a thong)
- Hollywood & Brazilian
- Underarm, Forearm
- Eyebrow, Lip & Chin

During treatment, you will be on the beauty couch. We start by cleaning the area with a pre-wax solution and then the wax is selected for the best results.

Wax is applied using a wooden spatula and removed in sections until the area is hair free! Depending on the area this can take between 5 mins and 45 mins. While waxing I’ll advise the positions you need to be in for best results. This can include things like bending your knee in a leg wax. I’ll also advise if there’s and area that you can help stretch the skin to avoid additional pulling (this is vital in intimate waxing).

Once complete, a cooling afterwax solution is applied to remove any remaining bits of wax and to sooth and cool the skin.

FAQ’s

Who isn’t suitable for waxing?

Generally waxing is safe for many, however if you suffer from hyper-sensitive skin, haemophilia or uncontrolled diabetes there may be a better option for you.
You must also avoid waxing if you have sunburn on the treatment area, a rash or other contagious skin condition or if you have used tanning products.

How long does it last?

This varies depending on the area and your own personal hair growth. Generally, legs can stay smooth for up to 6 weeks for some. Bikini waxes more like 3-4 weeks. Many will get growth before then so its trial and error until we space your appointments to your own hair!

Does it hurt?

It’s not the most comfortable - after all we are pulling the hair out from the root! Most clients agree that the more they wax the less discomfort they feel and this subsides quickly. Worth it for the smooth finish!
Time of the month can alter your pain threshold along with many other reasons. If you’re concerned, ibuprofen 30-45 mins before your treatment can help.

Before & Aftercare

Come to your appointment with a clean area to ensure the best results at the treatment! Try to exfoliate a couple of days prior to prep the area and loosen any ingrown hairs. Make sure to avoid any tanning products on the treatment areas!

Hairs will need to be around 3-5mm, about the length of a grain of rice, to wax effectively. Its also best to wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment.

Slight soreness, bumps and redness is common and a normal temporary reaction. This should subside within 48 hours. Aloe Vera gel and cold compresses can reduce this reaction.

Avoid hot baths/showers, friction, sun beds and swimming for 24 hours after treatment.

Exfoliating between treatments can help reduce ingrown hairs!
